| The number of trips made overseas by Britons during the first half of this year was unchanged from 2011, figures show.
The Office for National Statistics said the number of trips abroad made between January and June totalled 25.95 million - the same as a year earlier. However, the number jetting off overseas during June was higher than the same month a year earlier, with 2011's 5.60 million total rising to 6.08 million, suggesting a busy month for those in travel jobs. On the flip-side, the number of foreign tourists visiting Britain during the first half of the year rose during the period. The ONS said the first six months saw 14.75 million trips form overseas visitors - an increase of 2% compared to the same period a year earlier. The same year-on-year rise was recorded for the amount they spent this year compared to last. Between January and June more than £7.8 billion was spent - up 2% on a year earlier. The number of trips made to British shores by Americans was up 5% compared to a year earlier. Copyright Press Association 2012 |
