Engaging with Twitter followers and making new Facebook friends has earned cruise giant Carnival the top spot in the FTSE 100 social media index.
The index ranks the performance of companies on Facebook, blogging, Twitter and YouTube to create a list of the top performers in digital reputation management.
Published by digital corporate communications agency The Group, the index deemed Carnival to be making the most comprehensive use of social media.
The company, revered among the cruise operators industry, was found to have performed well across all the channels included in the survey and topped the rankings for corporate blogging.
The report indicates that those working in travel jobs are becoming increasingly social-media savvy.
The Group managing director Cathal Smyth said: "The FTSE 100 is clearly investing more in reputation management through social media, but our analysis also indicates that demand for information via these channels is outstripping supply."
Twitter has become the leading channel for digital corporate communications, according to the study. It showed that the number of people following corporate accounts on the site has risen nearly three-quarters since last June to more than a million.
